The historic Mill Manager’s House at 907 N. Craven Street must be moved. The structure was built circa 1908 by Roper Lumber Mill as a home for the mill manager.
The New Bern Preservation Foundation is working to save this house from being demolished.
This two-story frame house has a side-hall plan with 7 rooms and approximately 2,850 square feet. The original millwork, detailing, and fireplace mantels remain.
Offered FREE to someone who will agree to relocate the house at their expense, for use as a home or for an adaptive reuse.
Although the Preservation Foundation has a number of covenant and restoration requirements applicable to the Mill Manager’s House, the building does not have to remain a house and could be used as office space.
One estimate for moving and foundation costs is $25,000. Purchasing, instead of already owing a lot, would run a minimum of $35,000. Depending on the lot, the cost could be as much as $75,000 to $95,000. After the move, the restoration costs are estimated at $125,000.
Total project cost is estimated to range from $185,000 to $245,000 within the New Bern area. This amount could be considered a bargain at $65 to $86 per square foot since this is less than the prevailing $100 per square foot for new construction.
