A Glimpse into the Past
Constructed in 1910, Union Station Depot was a pivotal hub for rail travel in Eastern North Carolina, facilitating passenger journeys from Goldsboro to Raleigh and beyond. The station not only served as a transportation nexus but also bore witness to significant historical periods, including the Jim Crow era, reflecting the complex social narratives of its time.
After ceasing operations in 1987, the depot fell into disrepair, with its interior accumulating debris over the years. Despite these challenges, the building remained a symbol of New Bern’s historical landscape.
Preservation Efforts
The New Bern Preservation Foundation (NBPF), established in 1973, has been at the forefront of restoring Union Station Depot. In the 1990s, NBPF undertook critical maintenance work to stabilize the structure. By 2009, a public-private partnership, including NBPF, the City of New Bern, and the North Carolina Railroad Company (NCRR), was formed to spearhead comprehensive restoration efforts.
The restoration project has seen significant preservation renovations:
- Repair and painting of all ground-level windows and exterior doors.
- Restoration of interior trim and woodwork.
- New roof.
- Ceiling redone on both wings of the ground floor.
- Electrical system upgrades.
These efforts were aimed to preserve the building’s historical integrity while adapting it for contemporary use.
Community Engagement
Community involvement has been integral to the depot’s preservation. Events like “Dining at the Depot” in 2014 attracted over 1,300 attendees, raising awareness and funds for the restoration. Additionally, the “Depot 100 Campaign” encouraged local organizations to contribute to the cause, fostering a sense of collective ownership and pride in New Bern’s heritage.
