Preserving New Bern’s historic buildings takes more than protecting the downtown historic district. Historic homes, architecturally or culturally significant buildings throughout our community help tell the story of New Bern—and they need protection, too.
The New Bern Preservation Foundation works with property owners to protect these irreplaceable places through protective covenants, preservation easements, façade easements, and other preservation tools. We also help save threatened properties, support restoration efforts, and connect property owners with information and resources to guide their preservation decisions.

Preservation Isn’t Just Downtown
New Bern’s architectural heritage extends well beyond the boundaries of the historic district. Homes, churches, commercial buildings, and other structures throughout the city contribute to the character and history of our community. Many of these properties are not protected by local historic-district regulations, making voluntary preservation tools especially important.
Whether you own a centuries-old house, an early 20th-century residence, or another building with historic, cultural, or architectural significance, there may be ways to help ensure its character survives for future generations.
